The Wiener Kathreintanz is the ball of Austrian traditional dances and the country's most significant folk-dance event. It falls on the last Saturday before the first Sunday of Advent and, by old custom, marks the end of the dancing season. Guests dance handed-down figures in formal folk dress, to several folk-music ensembles playing across the Palais Ferstel.
